When an old high school friend said she wanted to visit me in Singapore last March to catch up and take a trip together somewhere in the region, I put on my thinking cap to come up with something really special and interesting. This would be a rare trip without my two young sons in tow, so I was free to pass over the family-friendly, culturally devoid mega cruise ships and high-rise beach resorts and go for small and quirky.
